Day One

Ed note:  I lost a lot of this blog post by accident. Trying to find it.

I love roadtrips.  Such an American phenomenon.  Think of all the great roadtrip movies out there.  Among my favorites:

Easy Rider (get your motor running!!)
Lost in America (get your motor running, again - and touch Indians, but remember the "nest egg principal"!!)
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Very poignant, in the end. John Candy was great and Steve Martin was no slouch.)
Midnight Run (Charles Grodin with Deniro - a good combo.)
Thelma and Louise (My trip won't end that way.)
Ishtar (This one is for Leslie. It's so much better than you think!)

Yes, road trip movies are usually "buddy movies" but mine is solo.  Hey, can anyone come up with a solo road trip movie??

Anyway, the trip started great in that we missed an hour delay on 17 due to listening - without intention - to the traffic report on the marvelous KPIG, followed by a quick check with WAZE! Saved our ass. I didn't have to sweat at the airport, and Leslie got back to the Cabrillo Music Festival open rehearsal to hear Wynton Marsalis's piece.

But then my broken arm led to problems on the plane. Specifically, I spilled water and then coffee on the poor woman stuck in the middle seat.  Plus I spilled coffee on the plane floor. Three spills in five hours. No alcohol.  A record!!  She was a good sport, and spent the entire time in rapt conversation with the guy in the window seat. They traded arrest records and other fun things. Nice folks.  Damn, I forgot to take a picture of them!!

  3. My favorite always is Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance. But I can’t think of a solo.

  4. Leslie drove you to the airport????

Travels with charlie. I guess that isn't solo either.

    1. You are discounting Charley!? You must not have a dog. And, no dropping me off at the airport doesn't count...

  5. I have come up with some movies like Wild or Eat, Pray, Love. But they aren't my favorites...

  6. Wild was hardly a road trip! ha ha ha! Safe travels Robin, dear, and I'm sure your friend Nina understood! You are a very earnest friend :) P.S. This is Toni!

    1. Well, true. It was a solo journey trip on a trail, not a car. And, truly the other one doesn't count either.
